
On May 12, 2025, the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Management at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń hosted a lecture by Professor Ming-Chang Cheng from National Chung Cheng University, the second-largest university in Taiwan. Professor Cheng visited the Faculty at the invitation of Professor Magdalena Osińska, PhD, DSc, as part of the academic mobility programme funded by the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” (IDUB NCU).
Professor Ming-Chang Cheng is a renowned specialist in finance and managerial economics. His research interests focus, among other areas, on the economic structures of East Asia and the development strategies of high-tech industries.
The lecture, entitled The Development of Semiconductor Industry in Taiwan for the Last 40 Years, explored the evolution and dynamic growth of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. Professor Cheng presented the key stages in the development of this sector’s competitiveness, highlighting its innovative business model, institutional factors, industrial policy, and the collaboration between government, academia, and the private sector. He also discussed the main determinants of Taiwan’s success in the global semiconductor supply chain.
The event was attended by numerous students and academic staff of the Faculty, providing an opportunity for direct engagement with an international expert and for gaining deeper insights into the strategic challenges and trends shaping the high-tech sector. The lecture received considerable interest and was highly appreciated by the participants.
